Our society, cutting across national boundaries, is faced with certain significant trends. There is a rapid and continuous technological change in an increasingly global world, which gives rise to new ways of working and doing business. This, however, also results in a rather constant state of skill-mismatch for many, so that those active in their professional life need to often update and/or upgrade their skills. We also live in an ageing society. Increasing healthy life expectancy also enables people to work longer, but in turn also creates a need for providing opportunities to reskill and upskill competencies.
